JULIUS CAESAR’S BACKGROUND
509 BC
The Romans established a republic. A republic was a state ruled by
elected leaders rather than a monarch.
82 BC
General Sulla became a dictator.
Pompey the Great existed between 106-48 BC.
60 BC
Caesar joined with Pompey and Crassus to rule as the First
Triumvirate. These three men were resisting the Senate’s control.
58-51 BC
Caesar’s power began.
Pompey became nervous about Julius Caesar, so he allied himself
with Caesar’s conservative rivals to beat him. Pompey ordered
Caesar to give up his army; he wouldn’t, so this led to civil war.
53 BC
Crassus died. This led to only Pompey and Caesar holding the power.
Caesar led his troops against Pompey; this obstacle helped his rise to
power.
Caesar forced Pompey to flee to the Balkans after these two battles.
49 BC
Within sixty days, Caesar became master of Italy. He continue to war
with Pompey. Caesar followed him to Egypt where the Egyptian
government killed Pompey.
Pompey’s sons reorganized after his death to take control of Rome.
46 BC
Caesar asked an astronomer to create an accurate calendar. This is
very similar to what we have today.
45 BC
Caesar defeated forces in Spain. Julius became the sole ruler of
Rome. This is where our story begins. Julius Caesar was on his way
home to take over Rome.
Marcus Brutus had fought on the side of Pompey, but Caesar
pardoned him.
44 BC
Caesar was assassinated.
43 BC
Octavian, Mark Anthony, and Lepidus formed the Second
Triumvirate.
Lepidus was shut out of the Triumvirate. This left only Anthony and
Octavian. Mark Anthony joined forces with Cleopatra.
31 BC
Octavian defeated Mark Anthony and Cleopatra.
27 BC
Augustus became the Roman emperor. Octavian changed his name to
Augustus.
14 AD
Augustus died.
96-180 AD The Roman Empire reached its height of power.
476 AD
The last emperor, Romulus Augustulus, was overthrown.
