Ecology
Eco: habitat or environment or nature
Logy: study of
How would you define ecology?
Ecology (noun)
The study of the interactions
of living organisms with one
another and with their
environment.
A pond’s ecology is interesting
to study because you can
understand how different
living things interact (work
together)in a small space.
Biotic
Describes living factors in the
environment
The biotic factors in a pond
are usually frogs, insects, and
plants.
Abiotic
Describes the nonliving part of the
environment, including water, rocks,
light, and temperature
Plants need abiotic factors such as
sunlight, water, oxygen, and soil to
grow.
“A” is a prefix which means not.
Abiotic means not living.
Organism (noun)
A single living thing
The dear is an organism
because it is a living thing.
population
A group of organisms (living things)
of the same species (kind)that live in
a specific geographical area.
This is a population of deer because
they are the same type of
animal/organism (species).
The population of deer in this visual
(picture) is 5.
Community
Science definition:
All the populations of species
that live in the same habitat
and interact with each other
Social Studies definition is:
A group of people who live in
the same place.
Ecosystem
A community of organisms
(living things) and their abiotic
(non-living things)
environment.
At this level scientists study
how the non-living and living
parts interact.
Biosphere
Bio means life
Spere means round
The part of Earth where life exists
Scientists study large interactions
like total human pollution and
impact on the atmosphere.
