Thales
Thales
Born: about 624 BC in Miletus,
Asia Minor (now Turkey)
Died: about 547 BC in Miletus,
Asia Minor (now Turkey)
The ancient Greek philosopher Thales
was born in Miletus in Greek Ionia.
Aristotle, the major source for Thales's
philosophy and science, identified
Thales as the first person to
investigate the basic principles, the
question of the originating
substances of matter and, therefore, as
the founder of the school of natural
philosophy.
Thales was interested in almost
everything, investigating almost
all areas of knowledge, philosophy,
history, science, mathematics,
engineering, geography, and
politics.
Five basic propositions with proofs of
plane geometry are attributed to Thales.
1. A circle is bisected by any diameter
2. The base angles of an isosceles
triangle are equal.
3. The angles between two intersecting
straight lines are equal.
4. Two triangles are congruent if they
have two angles and the included side
equal.
5. An angle in a semicircle is a right
angle.
Thales’ Theorem
Proposition. An angle in a
semicircle is a right angle.
- Thales predicted the solar eclipse
of May 28, 585 BC.
- Cosmology: water as a first
principle
- Thales found out the height of
pyramids by comparison
between the shadows cast by a
person and the pyramids.
