TERMS
DEFINITIONS
Nerve cells (neurons)
Specialized cells that receive and send
messages to other neurons.
Dendrites
Pick up messages from other cells and
convey that information to the cell body.
(Looks like branches around the cell)
Axons
Takes messages from the cell body and
sends them out. (Looks like the tail of
the cell)
Glial cells
Little cells that protect and surround the
neurons. They also provide support and
nutrition.
Nerves
A bundle of nerve cells that transmit
messages through your body. Messages
are received and sent from nerve cell to
nerve cell along a nerve and through the
spinal cord to the brain.
The control centre of the body. It is an
organ in the skull made from nerve cells.
It receives messages from all parts of
the body and sends out messages in
return.
A long rod made of many nerves attached
to the base of the brain and running down
almost to the end of the spinal column.
Nerves from the body are attached to
the spinal cord.
Organs that gather information from
outside sources. (examples: skin, nose,
eyes, ears, tongue)
Brain
Spinal cord
Sense organs
Central Nervous
system
The main control centre of the nervous
system. This includes the brain and spinal
cord.
Peripheral nervous
system
All the nerves that branch off from the
central nervous system that allow your
central nervous system to communicate
with your body. (nerves in arms, legs,
stomach, etc)
