Bird Evolution and Natural Selection
1. Look at the Unique Beak Physique Worksheet and choose 3 birds to write a short description of
what you think their environment is like and how their beak fits their habitat and diet.
2. You can check your answers on the answer chart. Choose 2 similar birds from the pictures and
draw a ‘possible’ common ancestor for them. What is one possible mutation that could have
happened to create the modern version of one of the birds you chose.
3. Looking at the picture of Darwin’s Finches draw a possible common ancestor for this group of
organisms.
4. Darwin found these different finches on different islands, and later had the theory that they were
all variations of the same type of Finch. Looking at the differences in the beaks write a paragraph
about the process that they went though to become different species. Be specific about what caused
the changes, and how it affected the population of Finches.
