Insect Note Sheet:
1.
List the categories that can be used to group living things.
Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species
2.
List the Kingdom, phylum and class that contain the insects.
Kingdom – Anamalia
3.
Phylum – Arthropoda
Class - Insecta
What is an exoskeleton? What is it made of? Describe this material.
Outer protective layer. Chitin. Carbohydratte (wood like material)
4.
List the general parts of the insect’s body. Describe, generally, what happens in each part.
Head – Brains
5.
Thorax – Muscle
Abdomen – Guts & Reproduction
Describe the common features of insect legs.
All legs are attached to the thorax and are jointed.
Used for: Jumping , Grasping , Running , Swimming
6.
What are the functions of the antennae?
Sensing: touch, air motion, heat, vibration (sound), smell, and taste
7.
How does the function of the wings vary with different insects?
Some use wings for flying only, some use for protection (beetles) – hardened fore wing
8.
What kind of eyes do insects have? How good is their vision? What can they see that we cannot?
Simple (made up of one lens) or Compound (made up of many lenses).
Some insects can see in ultraviolet and infrared light. Many species can see in color.
Insects see one shape (although distorted or pixilated)
9.
How do insects breathe?
Insects breathe through spiracles on each side of the abdomen and thorax.
10. Why isn’t insect blood red??
Insect blood does not transfer oxygen throughout the body
11.
Looking at the nervous and circulatory systems of insects how is their arrangement different from us?
Insects have an open-circulatory system – blood is circulated without blood vessels.
Insect nervous system begins with a small collection of neurons called a brain in the head
12. Describe incomplete metamorphosis.
Incomplete Metamorphosis – EGG – NYMPH - ADULT
**NYMPH look like adults except for size, coloration, and lack of wings**
13. How is complete metamorphosis different from incomplete metamorphosis?
Complete Metamorphosis – EGG – LARVA – PUPA - ADULT
** LARVA look nothing like the adult**
14. How are Butterflies and moths different from each other?
BUTTERFLIES – thin abdomen, thin antennae w/ knob on end, fly during day, wings
vertical at rest, pupa rest in chrysalis
MOTHS – thick abdomen, feathery antennae, fly at night, wings horizontal at rest,
pupa rest in cacoon
15. What is the good and the bad with butterflies and moths?
Good – cross-pollination of flowers
Bad – destructive to plants and clothing
16. How do some mosquitoes infect people with a disease?
Directly through their bites or indirectly through their feet
17. What are some differences between wasps and bees?
Bees – barbed stinger Wasps = non-barbed stinger – pray on other insects – makes nest out of paper
18. Why is it said that ants have a society??
They live together in tunnels, trees, or anthills. An ant colony has many workers.
19. How do insects protect themselves from predators?
Camouflage or mimicry or warning colors (bright coloration)
20. What is the difference between camouflage and mimicry?
Camouflage – blending in with your surroundings
Mimicry – look like other more annoying insects or larger animal
Camouflage and Mimicry – look like the object on which they are resting
