Objective: I can compare and contrast the ancient Greek city-states of Athens and
Sparta.

status) and responsibilities of (e.g. paying taxes and military service) citizenship under
various governments.
Common Core Standards: RH.6-8.10 By the end of grade 8, read and comprehend
history/social studies texts in the grades 6–8 text complexity band independently and
proficiently.
WHST.6-8.1 Write arguments focused on discipline-specific content.
Homework: 1. Complete Unit 6 Flash Cards - Due Tomorrow!
2. Finish Athens/Sparta essay if not finished in class.
Warm Up:

8. List the main differences between American democracy and ancient Greek democracy.
9. Which democracy would you rather live in and why?
Class Work:
1. Students will log on to Discovery Education and find unit 9.2 in their Social Studies Techbook.
Students will use pages 4-7 of the techbook to complete the graphic organizer comparing
aspects of Athenian and Spartan society.
2. We will review the graphic organizer and then students will complete and essay arguing
whether they would rather live in Athens or Sparta. This will be due the next day if not finished
in class.
