Dynamic Earth – Earth’s crust, plate tectonics, earthquakes and volcanoes SOLs These resources are focused for 5th grade science SOLs, though there related SOLs for almost every grade level. Specifically, the Interrelationships in Earth/Space Systems; Earth Patterns, Cycles, and Change; and Earth Resources strands of science education in Virginia are associated with the Dynamic Earth exhibit.  5.6 The student will investigate and understand characteristics of the ocean environment. Key concepts include a) geological characteristics; b) physical characteristics; and c) ecological characteristics.  5.7 The student will investigate and understand how Earth’s surface is constantly changing. Key concepts include a) identification of rock types; b) the rock cycle and how transformations between rocks occur; c) Earth history and fossil evidence; d) the basic structure of Earth’s interior; e) changes in Earth’s crust due to plate tectonics; f) weathering, erosion, and deposition; and g) human impact. Resources Lesson Plans (included)  The Ocean Floor lesson plan, interactive PowerPoint, and worksheet for students to work on in pairs (could also be done in whole‐class format).  A second Ocean Floor lesson plan. This is from Enhanced Scope and Sequence (ESS). Students create a 3D model of the ocean floor in a shoebox using clay and other materials.  Layer of the Earth lesson plan, also from ESS. Students use different colors of clay to build a 3D model of the layers of the Earth.  Plate Tectonics lesson plan, also from ESS. Students use frosting and graham crackers to mimic the movement of tectonic plates. Lesson also reviews volcanoes and earthquakes. Websites  http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/geology/tectonics.html This website has animated plate tectonics starting from 750 million years ago  http://science.nationalgeographic.com/science/earth/the‐dynamic‐earth/ National Geographic website on the Dynamic Earth, including earthquakes and plate tectonics  http://environment.nationalgeographic.com/environment/photos/volcano‐general/ National Geographic photo galleries of many volcanoes (also has earthquakes and other natural disasters)  http://teachertube.com/viewVideo.php?video_id=121356 Video lesson on doing a volcano and magma lab  http://teachertube.com/viewVideo.php?video_id=244331 Fun rap about the layers of the Earth to a popular rap song
