5 A* - C GCSE Grades, including Grade 9 – 4 English and Mathematics
English Language Grade 5.
THE COURSE
What causes crime? Why are some people rich and others struggling for money? Are men and women really equal in
society today? Why have youth cultures developed since the 1950s? Sociologists study these kinds of questions in
order to understand and potentially change the world we live in. The most important reason for studying sociology
today is that it is the best way of making sense of the complex and rapidly changing world. It will change your way of
thinking and develop your understanding of yourself and the forces that shape your behaviour. It will allow you to
question and challenge how we live and help you to understand social situations and human behaviour.
Year 1
Component 1 (40%) – Socialisation and Culture
One written paper of 2 Hours 30 Minutes.
Section A – Question on socialisation and identity
Section B – Question on topic of Youth Cultures
Section C – Question on topic of Sociology of Education.
Component 2 (20%) – Sociological Research Methods
One written paper of 1 Hour and 15 Minutes
One compulsory question based on stimulus material related to Research Methods in Sociology
Year 2
Component 3 (40%) – Power and Stratification
One written paper of 2 Hours and 30 Minutes
Section A – Question on social differentiation and stratification
Section B – Question on topic of Crime and Deviance
ENRICHMENT
Annual trip to Dartmoor Prison and custody centre, trip to Plymouth university Sociology taster day, other university
lectures and conferences.
