Plate
Boundaries
Earth’s Crust
• Earth’s crust is made up
of giant pieces of rock
that “float” on top of the
mantle.
• The plates move slowly
across Earth’s surface
(About 10cm per year).
• These plates moving are
called Plate Tectonics.
Plate Boundaries
• The places where one
plate meets another is
called a Plate
Boundary.
• There are 3 types of
plate boundaries:
1. Converging
2. Diverging
3. Sliding
Converging Boundary
• When two plates move
toward one another.
• Usually one plate
moves under another.
Which Graham Cracker
demo was that?
Creates mountains and
valleys.
Diverging Boundary
• When two plates move
away from one another.
• Melted rock rises to fill
space.
• Can be called sea-floor
spreading.
Which Graham Cracker
demo was that?
Creates valleys and
volcanoes.
Sliding Boundary
• When two plates slide
past each other
Which Graham
Cracker demo
was that?
Can show linear lines from
sliding.
