Welcome!
Colon Health, it’s not just
about Cancer.
Philip N Styne, MD AGAF
Medical Director
Digestive Health Center
The colon is the last
segment of the intestine
Main function of the
colon is to reabsorb
water which has been
added to food to help
with digestion and
absorption.
Affect of diet on colon:
Most food has been
digested and absorbed
by the time it reaches
the colon. Fiber and
some foods that can’t
be absorbed or aren’t
by their nature will
reach the colon.
Examples of foods that
cannot be absorbed are
sugars that are
specifically made to not
be absorbed and
lactose in those who
are lactose intolerant.
FODMAP foods may be
something to consider

Fiber is the non-digestible part of
vegetables and grains.
• The colon as with the other
portions of the GI tract has
specific patterns of movement
example; gastro-colic reflex.
• Understanding these movements
may aid in maintaining colonic
health.
• Normal patterns of movement
may be disrupted by inflammation
and irritable bowel syndrome
Common diseases of the colon:
•Diverticulosis
•Diverticulitis
Common diseases of the colon:
• Irritable bowel syndrome:
gas, bloating, pain, diarrhea,
constipation
• Colitis-acute, infectious
traveler's diarrhea, food borne

diarrhea, viral gastroenteritis
- Chronic, ulcerative colitis,
microscopic colitis,
post surgical
Common diseases of the colon:
• Hemorrhoids
• Constipation functional vs. structural
• Diarrhea small vs. large bowel
Colorectal Cancer
• The third most common cancer
in men and women.
• The second most common
cause of cancer death overall.
Our Goal:
• Prevent cancer morbidity
and mortality.
• Reduce occurrence and find
earlier more curable stage.
Preventable Disease
• Lifestyle
• Screening
• Medication
Screening
• Main method to reduce colon
cancer and find earlier diagnosis..
IT IS WORKING!
