The East Asian Financial Crisis of late 1990s, the
Easter Europe mortality crisis after the fall of
the Soviet Union, the financial crisis of Finland
during 1989-1997 when unemployment surged to
nearly 20%,the housing market crash in 2006
which led to one of the greatest economic crisis
first in the US and then in Europe and Greece ,
had tremendous effects on the public health.
Health effects:
 Unemployment _ stress , depression, poverty, social insecurity, all
of which are risk factors for suicide
 Increase of psychiatric illness
 Alcohol consumption and drug use
 Mental health services are being cut back _as part of
government austerity programs
 Deterioration of health facilities and equipment
 Shortage of drugs and other supplies
 Especially in the US_ the uninsured rate has now picked at
17% which cause a 40% increase in the mortality rate
 Abuse induced head trauma _as a result of violence has in
increased by 65% in the US during the recession period
 World’s hunger increased to 1 billion for the first time in
history
Since the beginning of the Crisis in 2007 Greece has
been affected more than any other European country
The dept grew from 239.4 billion to 328.6 billion between
2007-2010. As a result:
 Unemployment from: 6.6% May 2008 to 16.6% May 2011
(youth unemployment: 18.6% - 40% )
 40% cut in hospital budgets
 Suicides rose 19% from 2007-2009 and it will reach 25%
by the end of 2011 (50% of suicide cases are due to financial
difficulties and inability to repay personal debts
 Violence has doubled between 2007-2011 (AHD)
 Increase in HIV infections to 52% from 2010-2011 (922 new
cases versus 605)
 Prevalence of heroin dose by 20% ( from 20.200-25.100)
 85 % of the drug users are NOT in a drug rehabilitation
programme due to budget cuts
 Deliberate self infection of individuals to obtain access
to benefits of 700 €/month which have a 3-year waiting list
 Increased use of street clinics run by the NGOs(mainly
for immigrants) by the Greeks from 3-4% to 30% after the
crisis
 36 incidents of malaria -from illegal immigrants-. The
disease hasn’t occurred in the country for more than 30
years.
Economic Crisis is a HEALTH CRISIS, a HUMAN
CRISIS and the only way to fight it is to STOP
IGNORING IT!!
