Using Smith’s Statistical Package
Loading data
1. Go to File > Import Tab-delimited (not comma-delimited)
2. Select the file you want to load
You can try to copy and paste data to Smith’s Statistical Package, but sometimes it might
not work.
Calculating mean, median, etc.
Select Describing Data from the menu. Then select mean, variance to compute mean,
variance, and standard deviation. Select median, quartiles for the 5-number summary. A
window will pop up to ask you which variables to calculate. Select the appropriate
variable.
Graphing
Select Describing Data from the menu. Then select histogram, box-plot, etc. A window
will pop up to ask you which variable to calculate, and another window will ask you for
some options. Select the appropriate variable and/or options.
Caution: the y-axis of the histograms give a different kind of frequency (called density)
than we use in class. Just ignore this. Use the frequency from the table instead.
Caution: The box plots do not show outliers.
