Staff Benefits
Available to YOU
What can you get from being a
Reading Borough Council
employee?
Revised: May 2014
There is an impressive range of benefits available to you as a local
government employee and as part of your national and local terms and
conditions of employment, negotiated with the recognised trades
unions. For example:
 Supportive learning and workforce development opportunities
 Generous annual leave (for most staff: minimum 24 days, rising to
29 days after 5 years and 32 days after 10 years)
 Attractive schemes to support growing families - maternity,
paternity and adoption
 Thinking ahead – real rewards for long service (money and time
off)
 Thinking even further ahead! – A generous Local Government,
index-linked pension scheme and access to Additional Voluntary
Contributions to boost benefits
 Flexible working – Many RBC staff currently work flexible patterns
to better suit home commitments. It may be possible for you to
work flexibly as long as your service is able to manage it. Look at
Inside Information/HR/Work Life Balance for guidance notes
 Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) – positive help at work and
at home (for you and your family)
There are also a number of benefits (which are not part of your
‘Ts&Cs’) that you can access merely by being an employee of Reading
Borough Council (access to external benefits does not imply any
endorsement by the Council). For example:
 Staff Club – a social club for RBC employees that provides trips,
discounts, etc
 Corporate membership of the fitness centres at Reading Sport &
Leisure facilities – special rates for staff
 Bus to Work (salary sacrifice) Scheme – approx. 40% discount on
bus fares
 Discounted town centre car parking (Monday –Friday)
 Interest free season ticket loan for public transport or car park
season - minimum £250, minimum 6 months and maximum 12
months.
 Interest free bicycle/scooter loan maximum £1,000, repayable
over a period up to 12 months.
 Cyclescheme: Hire a bicycle and safety equipment (maximum
£1,000) tax-free and make payments over 12 months.
 Car Club: Membership of Reading’s Car Club (Pay As You Go)
 Hexagon Discounts:
30% (daytime only) discount for RBC employees in the Café at the
Hexagon. This includes most food items, soft drinks and all hot

chocolate bars and crisps; smoothies, mineral water and other bar
items and ice creams).
10% discount on selected shows throughout the year (details can
