DEVELOPMENT OF THEORY AND PRACTICE IN GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING SYNOPSIS This paper is concentrated mostly on development of theory and practice in soft clay engineering. Development toward understanding of soil strength deformation behavior is first discussed. Theories and concepts for stability evaluations, deformation analysis, and for obtaining suitable soil parameters are presented in general. Theories or concepts which are acceptable in practice for predicting behavior of embankment constructed on soft clay are summarized, including the writer’s proposed stress path method which considers undrained creep and shear flow movement. Its validity is demonstrated from case studies. Predicted time dependent deformation problems are outlined. Soil models developed at this conference are reviewed.
