Medieval and/or Renaissance Art Grade: 4+ Length of program: 50 minutes - 1 hour Requirements: screen or blank white wall in a room that can be darkened Note: Program may include religious imagery Program Description: Students explore the motivations, patronage systems, and visual styles of Medieval and/or Renaissance European artworks. Themes can be adjusted to requirements of the classroom teacher, but may include discussion of religious patronage and use of art as an educational medium, aesthetic values, techniques, storytelling and mythology, humanism, appreciation for ancient Greek/Roman cultures, and cultural values. Goals: • To understand the purposes and patrons of the visual arts during the 13th – 16th centuries in Europe • To introduce techniques and criteria for artistic expression in these eras in Europe • To understand how artistic expressions of ancient cultures affected artists during the Renaissance Rationale: The visual arts document human experiences and values. Viewing and discussing visual images deepens understanding of history and the methods and motivations of artists/cultures. Topics: • Overview of various types of artworks of the Medieval/Renaissance eras, possibly including architecture (cathedrals, etc.), sculpture, painting, manuscripts • Development of artistic styles for specific purposes • Discussion of patronage (who commissions artworks and why) in the Medieval/Renaissance eras To Schedule: Initiate a program request online or call Phoenix Art Museum’s Program Coordinator 5 weeks in advance of your desired program date at (602) 257-4356.
