Title:
Framework for Aeroelastic Wind Turbine Blade Analysis
The trend in the last few years has been to increase the amount of wind energy in our energy mix. The
design of wind turbine blades involves modeling structures, aerodynamics as well as control systems and
coupling together in an aero-servoelastic code. Modern wind turbines are designed using relatively low
fidelity simulation models based on beam or modal models of the structure. These models are usually
limited in their ability to model effects such as bend-twist coupling which are important for the modeling of
aeroelastic tailoring.
The design of wind turbine blades combines aerobatic modeling with Modern aerospace optimization and
analysis use more advanced structural and aerodynamic solvers.
As part of a new effort at the University of Michigan a new, higher-fidelity aerostructural code has been
developed. This code uses a widely used blade element momentum (BEM) code (AeroDyn) and couples it to
an in-house structural solver which is particularly suited for optimization studies. The coupled code is
converged to a steady-state (static) solution.
The coupled code is compared to an existing lower fidelity code using a model based on the NREL 5 MW
wind turbine. This code will be used in future projects to do time-domain analysis and optimization.
The presentation will be given in English.
