SOUTHBOURNE SURGERY NEWSLETTER
December 2016
Goodbye statement from Dr Jane Caballero
It is with great sadness that I will be stepping down as a partner from Southbourne Surgery on 5 th
January 2017. It has been a huge privilege to be a GP at Southbourne for the past thirteen years
and I will miss so many patients. I will be working a little closer to where I live to ensure I see
more of my family and hope you support and understand my decision.
Dr Jane Caballero
The surgery is trying to recruit a new GP to cover Dr Caballero’s sessions. In the meantime, these
sessions maybe covered by locum doctors, or by one of our GPs working additional sessions.

Treating the symptoms of a cold / sore throat
You can manage cold symptoms yourself by following some simple advice. You will normally start
to feel better within 7-10 days:

Drink plenty of fluids.

Get plenty of rest.

Contact your local pharmacy for advice on over the counter medication available to treat
cold symptoms.

Further advice is available on the NHS choices website: www.nhs.uk
While most bugs will run their course without doing any real harm, there are certain cases when
you or your child should see a GP. These include:

If you or your child has a chronic condition such as asthma, diabetes or heart disease.

If you have a very high temperature and feel ill, for example if you have an unusually
severe headache or abdominal pain.

If your child is vomiting but does not have diarrhoea, or has rash in addition to the fever.

If your child stops drinking and is unusually lethargic.

If your child’s fever does not respond to Paracetamol or Ibuprofen.

You have a persistent high temperature that is above 38°C (100.1°F) which does not
reduce.

You have frequent sore throats that do not respond to painkillers such as Paracetamol,
Ibuprofen or Aspirin
Babies and older and frailer people should get help if they are unwell. All babies under 6 months
with a temperature of more than 38°C (100.4°F) should be urgently assessed by a doctor, as
should babies aged 3 to 6 months with a temperature higher than 39° (102.2°F).

To all our patients we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
