Section 4-1
• What is a rock?
• What is the rock cycle?
• A rock is a mixture of minerals,
glass, or organic matter (plant
and animal matter)
• The rock cycle shows the 3
different types of rock and how
they can change into the other
types of rock.
The processes that change rocks to
another type of rock are:
• Weathering – the breakdown of rocks into
smaller pieces (sediments), either
mechanically or chemically
• Erosion – the process of sediments being
carried/moved to another location, either by
gravity, glaciers, wind, or water
• Deposition – the process of sediments being
dropped off and collected over time
• Compaction – the process of layers of small
sediments becoming compressed by the
weight of the layers above them
• Cementation – the process in which large
sediments are glued together by minerals
deposited between the sediments
