DNA Replication
Main Idea: DNA can make copies of itself.
DNA Replication – the process by which a DNA molecule
makes an exact copy or replica of itself.
DNA Replication Process:
1. Occurs during Interphase “S” (synthesis)
2. Enzymes “unzip” the DNA molecule by breaking the
hydrogen bonds between base pairs
3. Each strand serves as a template that complementary
nucleotides attach to
4. DNA polymerase joins the nucleotides together and
“proofreads” the new DNA strand for accuracy
5. The 2 new DNA molecules are identical to the original
DNA
