Bio-Ag assignment
Purpose: To describe the differences between animal and plant cells.
Materials and Methods:
Slides
Cover slips
Methylene Blue Dye
Droppers
Onions
Toothpicks
Microscopes
Obtain a very thin onion slice.
Place it on the glass slide
Make sure it is sufficiently dyed to see the cells.
Look at the cells on low, medium, and high power.
Obtain some animal cells by swabbing your cheek with the toothpick.*** Be
careful not to pull blood when you do it!!
Draw the animal and plant cells in the boxes.
Look at the diagram on the board and answer the following questions:
1. Describe the functions of the endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus,
chloroplast and mitochondria.
2. What does the cell wall do for the cell?
3. What is the role of the nucleus in the cell?
4. Describe how a cell could be like a factory?
5. If you examined a cell under the microscope and it had chloroplasts, what
kind of cell would it be?
6. Like above, but this time didn’t have a nucleus?
7. What are the three key statements about the cell theory?
8. Name two structures that all cells have?
9. What is the structure of the cell membrane?
10. What does the ribosome do?
