World History II Midterm Review Sheet Fall Semester 2015 Term Identification (5 points each → 40 points total) You will be asked to identify 8 terms from this list (about 10-12 will actually appear on the test.) You will need to identify each term with the following: definition or explanation of what it was, when it occurred, and why it is significant. Answers need to be written in complete sentences (not bullet points). Term Identification Example → Imperator: imperator was the name given to the Augustus/ruler of Rome by his princeps. The princep troops called the ruler this name during prosperous military times and it meant that the ruler had “imperium” or right to rule. This occurred during the beginning of the Roman Republic. The significance of this word is that it is the origin of our word for “emperor” and it also became the new title for the Roman ruler. It was an obvious shift from the Roman Republic to the Roman Empire. Write in complete sentences and restate the prompt in your answer. Essays should include detailed information to answer the prompt and should be about 2-3 paragraphs in length (this length is merely a suggestion; there’s no specific length requirement, but answers do need to be worthy of 15 points and written in essay format). 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. In what ways would the transition from hunting and gathering to a settled, agricultural society have improved people's lives, and in what ways would the transition have decreased the quality of life? Discuss the differences between Sparta and Athens. Compare and contrast their political life, military, and their similarities, and their differences. For what reason were they brought together and what was the result? Why is Alexander the Great considered to be the first true super-hero of Western Civilization? Is that reputation justified? Why and or why not? Explain Rome’s political structure including the following: the organization and the powers that each had, the plebeians role in government, and the problems with the Republic. Also, explain the advantages and disadvantages that Rome offered its conquered peoples. It has been said of the Romans that two of their major contributions to Western civilization were in the areas of law and engineering. What exactly did the Romans achieve in each area? What contributions did the Germanic peoples make to the new political, economic, and social conditions of early European civilization? What were the major accomplishments of Justinian? In what ways did those achievements burden and help transform the Roman Empire in the east? To what extent was the Carolingian world a continuation of the past, and to what extent did it represent change and innovation? Reminder: This test is worth 25% of your first semester grade.
