Engineering industry
keeps growing
•With a production base of more than 6,700 companies, the sector supplies
complete plans and manufactures machines (including turbines,
transportation and air conditioning equipment; agricultural, foodprocessing and construction machinery; and machine tools while also
engineering household goods.
•The sector accounts for more than 10% of revenues from the sale of products
and services of the manufacturing industry and employs 12.5% of the labour
force working in the manufacturing. The sector maintains its strong position as
a traditional exporter – between 80% and 90% of the sector’s output is
exported.

Transport industry
• The Czech Republic has always been a major producer of transport
equipment. Czech automotive production accounts for a significant portion
of the overall economic performance of the Czech Republic.
• The dominant position without any doubt occupies the manufacture of
passenger cars, followed by the manufacture of buses, trucks, trains,
motorcycles as well as container vessels, ships, chemical and gas
tankers.

Energy industry
• Thermal power plants produce the largest amount of electric energy
from all power plants, more precisely over 57%.
• Nuclear power plants produce 33% of all electricity produced in the
Czech Republic. There are two of them in our country: Dukovany and
Temelín.
• Hydroelectric power plants produce about 3.63% of country’s electricity
and the largest ones are the dams built on the V ltava River (Lipno, Kamýk,
Slapy, Orlík, Vrané).
• Wind and solar power plants produce nearly 1% of all generated energy.
Mining industry
• The Czech Republic is the fourth largest coal producer in the EU and
will remain one of Europe's largest coal producers as the country continues to
rely on domestic coal output for heat and electricity generation. Large-scale
coal reserves are domestically important as coal-fired power generation
accounts for around 60 per cent of the country's total electricity
output. It is forecast that Czech coal output will reach 53.4 million tons in
2018.

• Production of medical equipment is one of the most substantial
and innovative sectors of the Czech national economy. The rapid
development of the Czech medical equipment industry started in the
first half of the 20th century and soon this industrial branch began
recording magnificent international achievements (Gold Medal for
the cardiac defibrillator at the 1958 Brussels World`s Fair,
Nobel Prize for the invention of the polarograph and the
ground-breaking invention of hydrogel contact lenses).
• One of the most important current successes is the world-class
production of hospital beds. The excellent results of the Czech
medical sector together with the innovative potential of the domestic
industry support the positive expectations for the future and open up
new possibilities for Czech exports.
ICT
• IT companies with Czech origins are renowned worldwide for their products
and services (AVG Technologies, AVAST Software, Bohemia Interactive, YSOFT).
• Major IT companies that are successful in the Czech Republic: Microsoft,
Skype, Monster Technologies, SAP, DHL, Tieto, Hewlett-Packard, SolarWinds,
Red Hat and IBM.
• The Czech Republic is one of the very few countries in the world where Google
does not have a clearly dominant position on the internet search market. Its
local rival is the Czech company Seznam.cz.

•Nanotechnology itself could not exist without a robust industrial base comprising
the chemical, textile and electronics sectors and strong capabilities in the area of
developing new materials.

technology that has introduces a step-change into the production of nanofibrebased textiles, improving the production process

• Apart from glass, porcelain and ceramics, domestic glass jewellery.

The world’s leading producer of cut crystal, machine-cut chatons,
pearls and other bijouterie stones, and the Moser glass factory
producing luxury drinking glasses from stained glass and crystal in
Karlovy Vary.
• In addition to these traditional products of Czech glassmaking, an important
place in the Czech glass industry belongs to products which are used in other
economic sectors such as container glass, whose main purchaser is
the food industry, flat glass, which is used mostly in the building
industry, technical glass, which finds its customers in the
chemical industry and, finally, laminated glass, used in the car
industry.
