Conservation of Matter (Mass)
• Definition: Matter cannot be created or
destroyed. It can only change forms.
• Since matter cannot be created or destroyed
when we have an equation, the # of atoms on the
reactant side should EQUAL the # of atoms on the
product side.
• We have to have balanced chemical equations
(same number of reactants and products)
• When balancing equations, the ONLY thing that
can be changed is the COEFFICIENT.
