Superconductivity is the capacity that certain materials attain, when they are sufficiently
cooled, to allow electric current to pass through without resistance. One of its properties is
magnetic levitation. The discovery of this phenomenon, in 1911, opened up a vast field of
research into material physics. The applications and their potential development are very
important: magnetic resonance imaging in hospitals, economy of energy when transporting
electricity, magnetic levitation trains (Maglev), etc.
Scientists of our National Centre of Competence in Research MaNEP dedicated to materials
with novel electronic properties are studying superconductivity and attempting to understand
its mechanisms by exploring possible new applications.
