CELLS The basic unit of structure and function in living things. All living things are composed of cells. CELL THEORY Cells are the basic units of structure and function in living things. All cells are produced from other cells. CELL MEMBRANE A cell structure that controls which substances can enter and leave the cell. CELL WALL A rigid layer of nonliving material that surrounds the cells of plants and some other organisms. An organelle that helps to protect and support the cell. (not in animal cells) NUCLEUS A cell structure that contains nucleic acids, the chemical instructions that direct all the cell’s functions RIBOSOMES A small grain-like structure in the cytoplasm of a cell where proteins are made. LYSOSOMES A small-round cell structure containing chemicals that break down large food particles into smaller ones. VACUOLES A sac inside a cell that acts as a storage area. TISSUES A group of similar cells that work together to perform a specific function. ORGANS A group of different tissues that function together. CHLOROPLASTS A structure in the cells of plants and some other organisms that captures energy from sunlight and uses it to produce food. MITOCHONDRIA Rod-shaped cell structures that convert energy in food molecules to energy the cell can use to carry out its functions. Releases energy from the nutrients. ORGAN SYSTEMS A group of organs that work together to perform a major function. CYTOPLASM Jelly-like substance within a cell that holds most of the organelles TRAIT A characteristic that an organism can pass on to its offspring through its genes. REPRODUCTION The transmitting of genetic information from one generation to the next. ORGANELLES The tiny cell structures that carry out the functions of the cell. GOLGI A structure in a cell that receives proteins and other newly formed materials from the ER(endoplasmic reticulum), packages them, and distributes them to other parts of the cell. ER Endoplasmic Reticulum A cell structure that forms a maze of passageways in which proteins and other materials are carried from one part of the cell to another.
