Topic 3c: Systems of Measurement  Name basic units of metric system for weight volume and length.  Explain values of common metric prefixes used in health care.  Distinguish metric system units from apothecary and household units.  Recognize miscellaneous drug measurements.  Recall abbreviations for common units of measurement.  Match common units of measurement to equivalents units within the same and between different systems of measurement referring to supplied resource.  Translate common units of measurement from apothecary and household systems to equivalent metric system units referring to supplied resource.  Convert temperature measurements between Celsius and Fahrenheit using supplied formula.  Identify time of day according to 24‐hr clock. Topic 3d: Medication Equipment  Describe various calibrated equipment used to measure medication volumes.  Compare markings on 1mL, 3mL, 5mL, 10mL, 20mL and 60mL syringes.  Distinguish standard syringes from insulin syringes.  Select appropriate equipment to administer computed quantity of dosage.  Locate accurate measurement on equipment that equates to computed dosage volume. Topic 3e: Medication Labels  Distinguishes between brand and generic names.  Selects right drug for ordered medication when both brand and generic names are listed on label.  Identifies the dosage concentration of a tablet, capsule, oral liquid or topical medication.  Recognizes if a drug has expired. Learning Activity Topic 1: Introduction of Patient Care Team Members 1. In each small team, member should introduce themselves and share something personal about themselves. If someone prefers to be called by another name than is on the roster, have them PRINT the preferred name next to their name on the list on the cover of the folder. 2. Review the written goal matching and ranking assignment allowing members to share some of their personal goals for the semester as they chose. 3. After introductions are complete, the patient care team reporter will introduce the small team members to the other members of the team unit, sharing just a little something interesting about each person. Learning Activity Topic 2: Exploring Basic Pharmacology Knowledge 1. Complete the specific problem solving activities assigned to your team which is provided in the team folder. Two problems are assigned from the following list  Properties of an Ideal Drug  Landmark Drug Legislation  Drug Development  Randomized Controlled Trial  Drug Names  Over‐the‐Counter (OTC) drugs 2. Patient care team reporters will summarize findings and present a concise report to the class. Have someone fill the emesis basin with water. Be careful it does not spill near anyone’s laptop. Post‐conference 1. Unit Leader  Reviews topics and team assignments for the next week.  Asks group if there are any questions or problems that need to be addressed by instructors 2. Recorder  Solicits feedback from group and fills out weekly evaluation form.  Makes sure all is documented for the week. Collects any work generated and places neatly in team folder.
