LESSON 2: THE SOCIAL STRUCTURE OF THE ROMAN REPUBLIC
Background: The Roman Republic was characterized by an extremely rigid social class structure.
The social structure of ancient Rome was based on heredity, property, wealth, citizenship and
freedom. It was also based around men. Women were defined by the social status of their fathers or
husbands. While not impossible for some, movement between classes was extremely difficult. There
were even strict laws in place that forbid members of certain classes from establishing significant
relationships (such as marriage) with those of lower classes.
Activity: In this activity, you can use your textbooks and the internet to complete the social pyramid
of the Roman Republic. Once you have filled in the pyramid completely, you should then describe
each specific social class in detail (3-4 sentences per class).
