Chapter 5 Overview – Answer Key
1. Cell Theory:
• All living things are composed of one or more cells.
• The cell is the functional unit of life
• All cells come from pre-existing cells
2. Genetic information is contained in the nucleus.
3. Sexual & Asexual Reproduction
4. Robert Hooke, 1665
5. Robert Brown; 1820
6. Cell membrane is a covering around a cell that controls movement of
materials into and out of the cell (Both plant and animal)
7. Cell wall is the non-living outermost covering of a plant cell
8. 3 Functions of Cell Division:
• Healing & tissue repair
• Growth
• Reproduction of Organisms
9. Mitosis - Process of dividing nuclear material during cell division
10. Cytokinesis – process in cell division in which the cytoplasm and its contents
separate into equal parts
11. 6 phases of Mitosis
• Interphase
• Propase
• Metaphase
• Anaphase
• Telophase
• Interphase
12. Asexual reproduction – offspring are genetically identical to parents
13. Sexual reproduction – two sex cells unite to form a zygote
