Human Trafficking
Human trafficking is perceived to be a problem confined to faraway countries and only
the most crime-ridden American cities. But Milwaukee is now experiencing a high
volume in the number of cases where the average age of the children being groomed
and sold for sex is 13. That’s why parents and children need to know more about the
issue and what they can do to prevent it. Especially in the summer, when kids are
unsupervised and vulnerable to being targeted by traffickers.
According to Milwaukee Journal Sentinal 92% of youth trafficking in Milwaukee are
female, 78% are African Americans, 79% of human trafficking cases reported in
Wisconsin occurs in the city of Milwaukee . It is racially shewed and growing rapidly
even in our own backyard.
Human trafficking is one of the most dehumanizing things in the world. There are many
ways to engage in human trafficking. The three main ways are drug mules, sex slaves
and money laundering. Besides this there are other forms, but these are the most
convenient.
The first aspect of human trafficking would be drug mules. A drug mule is a person who
smuggles illegal contraband from one place to another. The drug mules are usually poor
people who need a quick source of income. As a drug mule, they usually get paid a
minor fraction of what the main crime lord gets or they smuggle for freedom. Drug mules
use their bodies as a smuggling bag via airports, boarders and other lawful checkpoints.
The downsides of being a drug mule are catastrophic, the drug mules have a constant
risk of being caught or being killed depending on the severity of how much drugs their
carrying. Death is always present because of the ways that they smuggle the drug
mules swallow capsules of cocaine, heroin, and marijuana. The capsules of drugs
ingested could rupture at any time, causing death instantly.
The second aspect of human trafficking is sexual slavery. Sexual slavery or sex slaves
are generally females of any age that gentlemen buy as pleasure. Sex slaves don’t
have an age limit and is one of the most inhumane things to do to a female. This is
present worldwide and is still continuing to grow to this day. Most of the sex slaves get
tortured and often killed if they do not comply with their “owners: requests. These
individuals are often impregnated and their babies are aborted to them on the market.
The last aspect of human trafficking is human money laundering. Money laundering is
the concealment of illegally obtained money, transferring to other places. Human
traffickers usually tape/implant lump sums amount of currency in or on their human
subjects. The risks of money laundering are intense. The consequences are a life in
prison with a hefty price.
There are many different organization geared toward helping fight against human
trafficking. Standing up against human trafficking takes courage, but anyone can get
involved by working for an anti-trafficking group or taking a stand on an individual
level. Get involved If you think something is suspicious or someone is being traffic call
the police **911**. In conclusion Milwaukee has created and organization against
Human Trafficking called the “Unlucky Thirteen Campaign” It was named this due to the
age ranges of children being taken. This Task Force includes bus shelter public service
announcements, digital billboards, and online and social media efforts to spread
awareness of human trafficking in Milwaukee. Parents, teens, and other concerned
community members can use this website for general information as well as safety tips
for both parents and teens.
