Friday Review Session Questions
1- What is the difference b/w Mitosis Promoting Factor (MPF) and checkpoints at M1 phase?
MPF allows the cell to go from G2 to M when cyclin and CDK concentrations are adequate, this regulates
the cell cycle. Mitosis checkpoints makes sure division occurred correctly and chromosomes divided
evenly and regulates the cell cycle.
2- “Guilty Bob” is accused of murder. You take a saliva sample (for DNA like in the PCR 1 lab). (A) Will the
normal bacteria in Bob’s mouth contribute DNA to the sample? (B) Will bacterial DNA cause Bob to get
away with murder? Why or why not?
(A): Yes, all DNA in the sample is extracted
(B): No, primers in PCR are specific to the gene in question.
3- How can so many unique antibodies be produced?
VDJ recombination (need more than just buzz words for a full credit answer), discuss the mechanism
and location.
4- What happens if B cells and T cells cannot recognize self-cells?
5- How do duplicated genes become functional and does mutation make it both functional and/or nonfunctional?
6- How can you tell if a newly discovered gene has been acquired through lateral gene transfer (LGT)?
