Philip II - Macedonian King

Alexander the Great – Macedonian ruler, greatest military commander in history

Philip wanted to conquer the Persian Empire. Was he successful? No
Why or why not? He was murdered.
After Athens and Thebes were defeated by Philip, why did the rest of Greece agree to make
Philip their leader? Greece had been in turmoil for 30 years. After Athens & Thebes
were defeated, Greek citizens probably realized that life would be more
peaceful under Philip’s rule than under conditions of war.
Why is Alexander called “the Great”? He was 20 when he took over the throne and
built one of the largest empires the world has ever seen.
How did Alexander help spread Greek culture throughout his empire? He built new cities
modeled on Greek cities, build theaters and temples, encouraged Greek settlers
to move to these new cities.
Why did Alexander model new cities after the cities of Greece? He admired Greek culture.
What happened to Alexander’s empire after his death? 3 generals divided the empire
among themselves. Within 300 years, all of Alexander’s empire had been
conquered by Rome.
What king conquered Greece in the 300s BC? King Philip II of Macedonia
What territories did Alexander the Great conquer? Asia Minor, Egypt, and the Persian
Empire
Why did Alexander destroy Thebes? Because they rebelled; to make an example for
other Greeks, so they would not turn against him
What three kingdoms were created out of Alexander’s empire after his death? Hellenistic
Macedonia, Syria, & Egypt
