who could sometimes
gain their freedom. The
region did not contain as
much gold as other
places.

Incas

Andes Mountains, Peru. They
were polytheistic like the
Aztecs and the Mayas. They
had no written language but
had a spoken language and
they used knots as messages.
They practiced animal sacrifice
and on special occasions
human sacrifice. The Incas
were in a civil war.
Cortez

explorer and
Conquistador. He
traveled with 500 men
and 16 horses to conquer
the Aztec people in their
capital of Tenochtitlan in
1519. Their capital was
built in the middle of a
lake and it surprised
Cortez and his men. He

How did the Spanish explorers and conquistadors change Central
and South America forever? (Where do we see the lasting effect of
these conquistadors even in 2011?)
Today (2011) most of central
and South America speaks
Spanish. A lot of Aztec, Inca
and Maya culture and
traditions have disappeared
forever.
