• y As part of a social studies lesson, make
scale drawings of, for example, historic buildings,
rail cars, canal boats, or aircraft carriers.
• y To plan the arrangement of a display,
decorations for a party, installment of equipment,
or other real-life events, prepare a scale-drawn
floor plan of the class, school wing, school, etc.
• y As part of a safety lesson, make scaledrawn floor plans of students' residences indicating, for example, the distance from a student's
bedroom to the nearest outside door.
• As part of a social studies project, use balsa
wood, clay, or other material to build a scale
replica of a historical building, a famous ship, an
Indian village, a Colonial town (e.g., Williamsburg), or other items of historical significance.
• Build train cars, houses, bridges, and so
forth to a standard model-train scale.
• y As part of a social studies lesson, visit a
battlefield and make a scale drawing of it. Then
discuss the battle using the map.
• y To plan a class trip, make a scale drawing
of the route.
