Organizing Organ Systems
What to do …
With a partner, read through the following list of tissues, structures, and organs. Sort
them in their appropriate organ systems. The boxes below the list represent organ
systems, and you can place the names of organs inside them.
When you have completed this, try to answer the question on how organs need to
work together.
List of Tissues, Structures, and Organs:
brain
spinal cord
arteries

tendon
liver
tongue
lungs
veins

With your partner, discuss and record your thoughts on the following idea:
"Organ systems do not function independently — they fit together like pieces to a
puzzle. All contribute to the overall functioning of the organism."
All systems work together to provide the body with the requirements
needed for survival. The circulatory system pumps nutrients through your
body, but it works with the digestive system to provide these substances.
It requires the help of the nervous system to coordinate the timing of
activities as well as the excretory system to remove these substances
(waste products). The circulatory system receives oxygen (O2) and
removes carbon dioxide (CO2) through the respiratory system and
obtains its nutrients from the digestive system. Organ systems need to
work together!
