Finding the Solution to a System of Equations by SUBSTITUTION Here is our system: 3x+6y=16 x+3y=5 Are either of the Equations already solved for one of the variables? Isolate: Solution: x + 3y = 5 -3y -3y x = -3y + 5 Substitute & Solve: 3x + 6y = 16 3(-3y + 5) + 6y = 16 3(-3y) + 3(5) + 6y = 16 -9y + 15 + 6y = 16 -3y + 15 = 16 -15 -15 -3y = 1 -3 -3 y = -1/3 ( 6 , -1/3) Substitute & Solve AGAIN: ** use the equation that is ALREADY solved for x** x = -3y + 5 x = -3(-1/3) + 5 x= 1 + 5 x=6
