VERBAL SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES
DENOTATION AND CONNOTATION
Denotation refers to the basic meaning of a word, which is the same from person
to person. Connotation refers to the positive or negative interpretations that may differ
from person to person.
Compare the meaning of “cheap” and “inexpensive.” The basic meaning
(denotation) of both words is “having a low price.” Cheap has the negative connotation of
poor quality. Inexpensive has the more positive connotation of acceptable quality.
For each pair of words below, underline the word with the more positive or
complimentary meaning (connotation). Write the basic meaning (denotation) that applies
to both words in the space provided.
