AP Environmental Science 2011-2012 (Student) Chautauqua Lake Central School Mr. Fortney 9:26-10:49 Block 2 - A Days, 9:26-10:06 Period 3 - B Days Rm. 206 Phone: 753-5800 ext. 3206, Email: [email protected] Course Overview The aim of the Advanced Placement Environmental Science (APES) course is to provide a survey of major and important environmental science topics while preparing students for success on the APES exam, developing critical thinking skills, refining laboratory/fieldwork skills, and exploring the scientific, cultural, political, and economic themes associated with environmental issues and policy. The APES course at Chautauqua Lake is intended to be equivalent to a semester college-level environmental science course. From the Instructor AP Environmental Science is a multiple disciplined subject not only in science but also looking at historical and cultural issues in regards to human influences on the environment. That is “how has man altered the earth”. APES is unlike almost any other AP courses offered by the College Board in that it does not directly reflect the college courses offered at most universities. Most universities offer a one-semester lecture based course where the students are tested on their knowledge from the lectures and the textbooks. The AP course at most high schools, is a full year course that uses lectures, textbook assignments and most importantly hands-on activities and projects to prepare them for the test in May. From the College Board AP Environmental Science differs significantly from the usual high school course with respect to the kind of textbook used, range and depth of topics covered, the kind of laboratory work done, and the time and effort required of students. The AP Environmental Science Development Committee has designated major themes that recur throughout the course. Teachers should emphasize the connections between the themes to assist students in organizing concepts and topics into a coherent conceptual framework. The six themes and their corollaries, which provide a foundation for the structure of the AP Environmental Science course are: science is a process, energy conservation underlies all ecological processes, the Earth can be thought of as one interconnected system, humans can alter natural systems, environmental problems have a social and cultural context, human survival depends upon developing practices that will result in sustainable systems. 1 Primary Text Living in the Environment: Principles, Connections, and Solutions by G.
