Weather and Water Cycle Study Guide
Name: KEY
Know the following definitions:
1. humidity: measurement of amount of moisture in air.
2. air mass: large body of air with same temperature and humidity.
3.weather: condition of atmosphere at particular time.
4.climate: pattern of weather in an area over time.
5.current: stream of water that flows like a river in the ocean.
6.meteorology: study of weather.
7.freezing point: the temperature at which water freezes (32 degrees Fahrenheit ).
8.clouds: form when water vapor cools and condensation dust particular in air.
9.fog: water vapor condenses into small droplets near the ground.
Questions:
10. What kind of weather is likely to occur if a warm air mass moves over a cold air mass? steady
rain
11. Which type of precipitation occurs when water vapor turns directly into ice? snow
12. What does a rising barometer often tell about the weather? cold air and low chance of rain
13. What happens to water vapor as it rises higher and higher in the air? water vapor cools and
condenses to form cloud
14. Which instrument measures humidity? hygrometer
15. Which instrument measures air pressure? barometer
16. Which instrument measures wind speed? anemometer
17.Draw a diagram BELOW of two air masses. Label the temperature of each air mass (warm and
cold) and where the front would be located.
18. Essay: Be prepared to write a paragraph explaining 3 weather instruments and what each one
measures.
Weather Vane- wind direction
Rain Gauge-amount of rain
Anemometer-wind speed
Hygrometer-humidity
Barometer- air pressure
Thermometer- temperature
19. Essay Question: What happens during the process of evaporation and condensation? Be able
to give and example of each.
Evaporation is the process in which liquid changes to a gas. An example of evaporation is
when the water evaporates from the ocean. Condensation is the process in which gas
changes to a liquid. An example of condensation is when a coke can sweats.
20. Be prepared to draw and label the water cycle (evaporation, condensation, precipitation,
ground water)
