Cell Specialization in Animals
Learning Goals
 I can describe cloning and stem cell research and
explain why they are controversial.
Cell Specialization in Animals
During early development of living organisms, cell
differentiation occurs during which specialized
cells form.
Cell Specialization
Definition
 the process by which cells develop from similar cells
into cells that have specific functions within a multicellular organism.
Note:
 Unspecialized
cells that can produce various
specialized cells are called: stem cells
What Factors Influence Cell Specialization in
Animals?
Content of cytoplasm
2. Environmental conditions
3. Influence of neighbouring cells
1.
Note:

Environmental factors such as chemical contaminants
and disease-causing agents may lead to abnormal
development.

What is a Tissue?
Definition:
A group of cells that perform a specific type of
function.
Four main types of tissue:
 Epithelial
 Muscle
 Connective
 Nervous

Success Criteria
 I can describe the 4 main types of tissues.
