Grammar – Linking Verbs & Predicate Adjectives
By now you certainly remember that adjectives modify (or add
information to) nouns and pronouns. When you are dealing with linking
verbs, how you draw arrows from adjectives to the nouns they modify
starts to look like a puzzle gone mad. First, you need to make sure you
know the linking verbs. Your grammar packet gave you a list to
memorize. You should learn those verbs.
In the samples that follow, the verb is double underlined and in red. The
nouns are labeled with an “N” and the adjectives are in blue and have
arrows above them that point to the noun they modify. Then, go about
finding the adjectives that modify nouns and pronouns. These samples will
help you with page 4 in the grammar packet that is due on Monday,
2.1.16.

The beautiful plant is dormant in the winter.
(In the sentence above, the verb = is / the nouns are plant and winter.
There are two adjectives – beautiful and dormant. Both modify plant.
You’ll notice that with the “normal” adjective, the arrow goes to the right
and is VERY close or NEXT to the noun. In the case of the predicate
adjective, it FOLLOWS the linking verb and the arrow goes backwards.
There are a few other examples below that feature “normal” adjectives
and predicate adjectives and how to place the arrows.
