Prophets, and Writing
 It contains 24 books

body
Spread of Judaism
 People carried their faith to other lands when they
were captured in battle.
 People also carried their faith if they had to leave
their homeland for different reasons.
 Greeks converted the Hebrew Bible into Greek which
helped Greek people be able to read the Hebrew
Bible and convert to Judaism.
 Most Jews do not seek to convert people to Judaism.
They believe that they were chosen to be Jews and
therefore it is a birthright not a choice for non-Jews.

Who are 3 important people
and why?
DO NOW
Ten Commandments
 Given to the Israelites as they were wandering in the
desert after leaving Egypt where they were enslaved
for a few hundred years.
 God gave Moses the Ten Commandments on Mt.
Sinai.
 The Ten Commandments were different from other
laws because they told how to live a “Godly” life and
a moral life. No punishments were listed.
 Judaism is mainly practiced by the Hebrew people
and today there are still adherents of Judaism
throughout the world due to the conquest of Jewish
lands and the dispersal of the Jewish people by
conquering empires
 Judaism is not a religion that actively seeks to
convert others
Why do societies need laws?
Where do laws come from?
 In the book of Exodus (in the Hebrew Bible, also
known as the Torah) the Israelites stopped at
the foot of Mount Sinai and Moses went up the
mountain to meet with God. Moses came down
the mountain with two stone tablets that are ten
laws.
 The Commandments and other laws told the
Israelites how to behave towards God and one
another.
 These laws are still important to Jews and to
many other people today.
The Ten Commandments
 I am the Lord thy God... You shall have no other

gods before me.
You shall not worship false idols…(Not worship
other things)
You shall not take the name of the Lord thy God
in vain...
Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy.
Honor thy father and thy mother...
You shall not kill.
You shall not commit adultery.
You shall not steal.
You shall not bear false witness against thy
neighbor (lie).
You shall not covet (desire)... anything that is thy
neighbor’s.

STOP and THINK
 Why was Judaism an important religion?
 Why do you think God chose Abraham?
 What does monotheistic mean?
 Why would it be important for the Hebrew Bible to
have laws and rules written in it?
