Germany 1918-1945
Was the Nazi Regime effective in
controlling German people?
Nazi Tactics to control
the German people.
A range of tactics was used by the Nazi party,
sometimes involving the use of force, or
propaganda.
Here are two examples of the use of force:
•
•
Anyone within the Nazi party who was not
thought to be totally loyal was eliminated.
People who opposed the Nazis were often
physically attacked.
Here are three examples of the use of
propaganda:
•
•
Children were expected to join Nazi youth
organisations.
The media was controlled by Josef
Goebbels.
Education was used to reinforce ideas about war
and racial struggle.
In addition, organisations which could challenge Hitler's control were taken over or
destroyed. Force was often used to close down other organisations if they could not
be 'peacefully' taken over.
The points we have used so far are all rather general. In an exam you won't get high
marks unless you can support your ideas with specific details.
The following details link up with the points made above:

Anyone within the Nazi party who was not thought to be totally loyal was
eliminated. Ernst Roehm was killed in the Night of the Long Knives in 1934.
Official government bodies were used to suppress any criticism or opposition
of Hitler and the Nazis. Many people were imprisoned by the SS and the
Gestapo.
Children were expected to join Nazi youth organisations. The Hitler Youth and
League of German Maidens prepared boys for war and girls for motherhood.
The media were controlled by Josef Goebbels. Loudspeakers were set up in
public places to broadcast Hitler's speeches.
Education was used to reinforce ideas about war and racial struggle. Maths
lessons were used to calculate what an aeroplane's bombing range was.
Organisations which could challenge Hitler's control were taken over or destroyed.
Trade unions were closed down and workers had to join the Nazi Labour Front.
