Transformers are used to
either increase or decrease
the voltage in a circuit
based on the number of
coils at the primary and
secondary coils of the
electromagnet. Is the
example her stepping up or
stepping down the voltage?
Their
other use
is in
relays.
Where
do you
come
across
relays
every
single
day?
In your house they are used in
circuit breakers. When do circuit
breakers shut off the
electricity?
When an image is seen in a
planar mirror we say it is
inverted and virtual.

Key Words:
Reflection: Light returning from a planar surface
with the angles of incidence and reflection being
equal.
Refraction: The bending of light as it crosses the
boundary between two materials of different
densities.
Diffraction: The spreading of waves as they pass
through a gap.
Concave Lens: A lens that causes light rays to
diverge.
Convex Lens: A lens that causes light rays to
converge.
Electromagnet: A device with an iron core and a
wire coiled around it. When a current is run through
the wire the core becomes magnetic.
Step up Transformer: A device used to adjust the
voltage. Step up transformer increase the voltage.
Step down Transformer: A device used to adjust
the voltage. Step down transformer decrease the
voltage.
In scrap yards
they are used to
lift things.
Why are they
better than
permanent
magnets at this?
Electromagnets
have some very
useful everyday
uses.
Snell’s Law: Tells us how much a ray
of light will refract at a given
boundary based on the refractive
indexes of the two materials.
Refractive indexes are based on how dense
something is. The higher its density, the
higher its Refractive Index.
The closer the size of the gap to the
wavelength, the greater the diffraction
that occurs.
