Bologna, Italy
With a population of 385,000 (80 thousand of
which are students), Bologna is the capital of the
Emilia-Romagna region. It is the most important
city of northern Italy between Florence and Milan,
a central train and plane hub known for its great
university and lively student life. Dating back to
the Etruscans in the 6th century B.C., it retains
much of the flavor of its Roman and medieval
past. Bologna is famous for its cuisine and rich
cultural life. The extensive town center,
characterized by miles of attractive covered
walkways is one of the best-preserved in Europe.
A significant portion of its population consists of
away-from-home university students.
The University
The Università degli Studi di Bologna, founded in
1088, is the oldest continuing institution of higher
learning in Europe and possibly the world.
Among its alumni are Thomas Aquinas,
Copernicus, the scientists Marconi (Nobel for
inventing wireless telegraph), Malpighi, father of
microsurgical anatomy, Robert Jarvik (developer
of the J-artificial heart), some of Italy's most
famous writers such as Dante, Petrarch and
Torquato Tasso, fashion entrepreneurs such as
Armani and Della Valle, film directors any many
others.
