Beware
•Jesus said: Beware…!
• Matt. 6 -12 Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the
Pharisees and of the Sadducees.
• 7 And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have taken no
bread.
• 8 Which when Jesus perceived, he said unto them, O ye of little faith, why
reason ye among yourselves, because ye have brought no bread?
• 9 Do ye not yet understand, neither remember the five loaves of the five
thousand, and how many baskets ye took up?
• 10 Neither the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets ye
took up?
• 11 How is it that ye do not understand that I spake it not to you concerning
bread, that ye should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the
Sadducees?
• 12 Then understood they how that he bade them not beware of the leaven of
bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.
Matt. 16:8-12
•12 Then understood they how that he
bade them not beware of the leaven of
bread, but (beware) of the doctrine of
the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

which brought thee forth out of the land
of Egypt, from the house of bondage.
• Matthew 7:15
•Beware of false prophets, which
come to you in sheep's clothing,
but inwardly they are ravening
wolves.
• Mark 12:38
•And he said unto them in his doctrine,
Beware of the scribes, which love to go in
long clothing, and love salutations in the
marketplaces,
• Luke 12:15
• And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware
of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not
in the abundance of the things which he
possesseth.
• Philippians 3:2
•Beware of dogs,
• beware of evil workers,
• beware of the concision
• Colossians 2:8
•Beware lest any man spoil you through
philosophy and vain deceit, after the
tradition of men, after the rudiments of
the world, and not after Christ.
• 2 Peter 3:17
•Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these
things before, beware lest ye also, being led
away with the error of the wicked, fall from
your own stedfastness.
• Matthew 10:17
•But beware of men: for they will deliver
you up to the councils, and they will
scourge you in their synagogues;
•Things Christians
Should Beware of:
•
• 1. Covetousness or Greed - Luke 12:15
•
15 And
he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life
consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.
•…
Possessions are nice, but there is never an upper bound when many people
can say there is nothing more they want.
•…
It is easy for greed to creep in unnoticed
…
The problem is covetousness and envy. A feeling that I have to possess, I have
to succeed before others, and that I’m the most deserving.
…
It destroys the person - Proverbs 14:30
• …
Out of control, it becomes the most important thing in our life - Colossians 3:56 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication,
uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is
idolatry:
• 6 For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience:
•
• 2.
Hypocrisy - Luke 12:1 1 In the mean time, when there were gathered
together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they trode one
upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the
leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.
•
1.
Hypocrisy is putting on an act or a show. It is pretending to
be what you are not.
•
2.
Doing good for the wrong reason - Matthew 6:1-2
•
3.
Appearing to be religious - Matthew 6:5
•
4.
Why should we be on the alert for this? It is an easy
attitude to slip into.
•
•
We like to think that we are righteous, so even as we slip into unrighteousness, we judge
ourselves as being fine –
• Proverbs 30:12 There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet is not washed
from their filthiness.
•
b.
We assume what we do is right, so we impose our standards on
others without ever going back to the source –
• Proverbs 14:12 Proverbs 14:12King James Version (KJV)
• 12 There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.
•
5.
We have to be on guard against that creep in our lives by always measuring
ourselves by God’s standard –
• Isaiah 28:17; 7 But they also have erred through wine, and through strong drink are out of the
way; the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink, they are swallowed up of
wine, they are out of the way through strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble in
judgment.
• Romans 2:2 2 But we are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth against them
which commit such things.
• 3.
False Teachers - Matthew 7:15
•
1.
Here the danger is not from within but from without - II Peter 3:17-18 Ye therefore,
beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the
wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.
• 18 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now
and for ever. Amen.
•
2.
Secretly bringing in false doctrine - II Peter 2:1-2)
• 2 But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you,
who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon
themselves swift destruction.
• 2 And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.
•
3.
The danger is accepting without checking - Colossians 2:8 Beware lest any man spoil
you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and
not after Christ.
•
•
4.
We can be overconfident, thinking we can’t be lead astray - Acts 20:28-31
5.
We don’t always give credence that some exist who purposely set out to deceive 14
Ephesians 4:14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every
wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
•.
“The price of freedom is eternal vigilance” - Thomas Jefferson
•
A.
We aren’t perfect, so we need to be watchful –
• Revelation 3:2-3 2 Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die:
for I have not found thy works perfect before God.
• 3 Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If
therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what
hour I will come upon thee.
•
B.
We cannot slack off as others have done –
• I Thessalonians 5:6-9 6 Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.
• 7 For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night.
• 8 But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for
an helmet, the hope of salvation.
• 9 For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,
•
C.
Watch, stand fast - I Corinthians 16:13 13 Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you
like men, be strong.
•Take Heed: Beware
# 1 Doing the will of God from the Heart
Eph. 6:5,6
• 5 Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters
according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in
singleness of your heart, as unto Christ;
• 6 Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the
servants of Christ,
• doing the will of God from the heart;
#2 Love Jesus in Sincerity: Eph. 6:24
• Grace be with all them that
Christ
•in sincerity.
love our Lord Jesus
Amen
#3 Knowing the power of Jesus in us!
Eph. 1:18-20
• 18 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may
know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the
glory of his inheritance in the saints,
• 19 And (know) what is the exceeding greatness of his power to usward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,
• 20 Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and
set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places,
Matt. 16:24-28
• Matthew 16:24-28King James Version (KJV)
• 24 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him
deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
• 25 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his
life for my sake shall find it.
• 26 For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his
own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
• 27 For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels;
and then he shall reward every man according to his works.
• 28 Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste
of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom.
