Cellular Respiration
The process in which the energy stored in a
glucose molecule is released by oxidation.
H+ atoms are lost by glucose and gained
by oxygen.
Glycolysis
The anaerobic breakdown of glucose;
yields two pyruvate molecules with a
net of two molecules of ATP.
ATP
Adenosine Tri Phosphate
ATP is the chief energy currency of all cells.
Cells focus all of their energy resources on
the manufacturing of ATP from ADP
Pyruvate Oxidation
Takes place only within mitochondria. It is
far more powerful than glycolysis at
recovering energy from food molecules
and is where the bulk of the energy used
by eukaryotic cells is extracted.
