Sir Walter Raleigh received charter
from Queen Elizabeth I (“Virgin
Queen”)



John White commanded the expedition.
121 colonists (91 men, 17 women, 13
kids)
Virginia Dare was the first white child born
in the new world (John White’s
granddaughter)



Supplies ran low, White goes back to
England but is delayed for 3 years
1590- settlement found deserted, no clues
about what happened to the colonists
except for the word “Croatoan” carved on
