The naturalist that came up with
the theory of natural selection.
Principle that states that an organism
must be able to survive and reproduce
in their environment.
CHARLES DARWIN
ADAPTATION
Principle that states that differences in
an organism’s phenotype drive natural
selection.
VARIATION
Principle that states that not all
offspring may survive, only the most
fit to survive will.
A term that measures the ability
of an organism to survive and
reproduce.
FITNESS
This theory describes how species
change over time.
OVERPRODUCTION
EVOLUTION
Principle that states that traits that
are beneficial are passed down from
ancestors to future generations.
SELECTION
Darwin observed variations in the finches
beaks. Why were they varied?
Adaptions to their individual environments and food sources.
Without this, evolution would not
happen!
Other than food, what are other
resources that species must compete
for in the wild?
VARIATIONS IN SPECIES
Water, shelter, space, light
This describes when nature
determines what will have a higher or
lower fitness level.
This type of anatomy shows similar
function, but not necessarily a similar
structure.
NATURAL SELECTION
ANALOGOUS ( can’t use as evidence of common ancestor)
This type of anatomy shows similar
bone structure, but not necessarily a
similar function.
This type of anatomy shows remnants
of structure that used to have a
function, but no longer do.
HOMOLOGOUS
VESTIGIAL
Two animals that have almost
identical DNA strands most likely:
