Charles Darwin (1809-1882) was a naturalist who set
foundation for the theory of evolution
 Evolution-
the inherited change in
organisms over time.
 Charles Darwin sailed around the world
collecting specimens of fossils, living
plants, and animals.
 Fossils-
the imprints or remnants of
organisms that lived a long time ago
 After
studying his specimens and other
scientist information for decades Darwin
concluded:
 All
life organisms have a common ancestor
 Organisms have descended w/ modification
from their common ancestor
 The
modifications are determined by
the environments the organism lived
in

 The
fossil record- All of
fossilized artifacts &
how they are placed w/i
the earth's rock layers
or sedimentary rocks.


Andes Mountains
It provides information
about the history of life on

 Biogeography-
the way species are spread
around the world

Darwin used this to explain how species
evolved from common ancestors
 Comparative
Anatomy- the comparison of
body structures of different species
 Discuss w/ partner: What do you have in
common w/ the cat, whale, & bat?
 Comparative
Embryology- the
study of structures
that appear during
the development
of different
organisms

Discuss: What do
these embryos
have in common?
The Genetic Code
 Molecular
Biologythe study of the
molecular basis of
genes and gene
expression
